Eastern New Mexico head men’s basketball coach Tres Segler is pleased to announce the signing of Jose Serrano out of Southwestern College.

Serrano is a 6’7 guard that originally hails from Barinas, Venezuela and will join the Greyhound men’s basketball team following a two-year career at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, Calif. Jose is now the sixth athlete that will be joining coach Segler’s team for the 2019-20 campaign later this fall.

“Jose Serrano being a part of our ENMU Basketball Family is a huge success,” coach Segler said, “We have recruited Jose for a great deal of time and we have built a really strong relationship with him. Jose is a special young man. He is the rare combination of size, athleticism, and high character that we look for when we recruit for our Greyhound Family. Jose has been working his whole life for an opportunity to finish his degree and play high level collegiate basketball, and we are blessed that he decided to be a Greyhound.”

Serrano burst onto the junior college basketball scene in 2017-18 as a freshman at Southwestern College, averaging 14.0 points per game while shooting 44.4 percent from the field and 32.9 percent from behind the three-point line. He was also active on the defensive side of the ball, averaging 7.6 rebounds per contest.

His play early on in his collegiate career earned him an invite to the Mullen’s Top 100 Camp, a showcase geared towards showcasing the top junior college recruits in the country.

Serrano appeared in just 10 games throughout his sophomore campaign before suffering a season-ending injury. He continued to prove himself as one of the top overall junior college prospects in the state of California prior to that injury, averaging 13.7 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game.

“We feel like Jose will impact our team on the perimeter as a scoring wing, and at his size and strength we feel that he will be a unique force in the Lone Star Conference,” coach Segler said, “He has the ability to play the skilled forward position as well, and it gives our team yet another skilled athlete that can play multiple positions. I am hopeful that all of our versatility will make us very hard to guard as a team.”

Serrano’s versatility and length at the guard position figures to compliment a talented backcourt for the Greyhounds well as coach Segler also returns Second Team All-LSC performer Devin Pullum, Isaiah Murphy and newly signed guards Idn Zaid and Brandon Meadows.

“Jose’s high basketball IQ is truly special,” coach Segler said, “He learned the game from his father and his family in Venezuela, and you can tell that his craftiness and thinking ability translates to his success on the floor. At 6’7 Jose is a physical force, and I think you will see from his highlight clips that he imposes his will at all times on those trying to defend him.”
