Coaches Report by Matt Hunton
The Portales Rams Boys golf team finished up the annual Spring Classic right where we started day two, in 4th place. Carlsbad finished in 1st place followed by Clovis and Artesia respectively.
The boys played well, but made a few mental errors that cost us 5 to 7 shots. Day two was completed with a 318. Thomas Tulk shot a one under par 70 followed by sophomore Talon Payne’s 81. Austin Davis shot an 82 and Andrew Underbrink finished the four scores with an 85. Mario Cordova shot an 86.
Thomas’ 70 was good enough to put him in a playoff for 1st place against NMMI’s number one player. They played the first hole at Spring River, a par 5. Thomas pulled his drive left and hit his second in the green side bunker. His opponent hit his drive down the middle and his second on the green. Thomas hit out of the sand, short of the green, and chipped it in for a birdie 4. His opponent made his 5 foot putt up the hill for eagle.
The boys finished well again for the second straight day, but struggled in the middle of the round. We continue to make mental mistakes that cost us in the long run, but I really like where we are heading down the stretch. The boys continue to work hard and improve their on course attitudes. I look forward to finishing up the year and heading to state. Portales has a team of 5 great young men putting in the work to do great things. Stay tuned…
Go Rams!
