SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Eastern New Mexico softball fell in a pair of LSC games to (RV) St. Mary’s University on Friday afternoon at StMU Softball Stadium. Eastern slip to 9-21, with a 2-12 Lone Star Conference record. The Rattlers move to 26-7 overall, and 10-4 in LSC play.

GAME ONE: StMU 4, ENMU 3

The Hounds got on the board early in the first inning after Lisette Urquidez went deep to left field. After Maite Bustillos walked, Urquidez took a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to give the Hounds an early 2-0 advantage.

However, the Rattlers responded immediately in the bottom of the frame. A flyout with a runner on second and third scored the first run for St.Mary’s, and later a two-out single with runners in scoring position swung the lead into StMU, 3-2.

The runs would stop until the fourth inning, as the Hounds brought the score tied with one run in the third. Azalea Martinez led off with a double to right center. After a sacrifice bunt, Brook Leger reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to second as the Rattlers putout Martinez at home. Sierra Wooleydelivered with two outs and posted an RBI single into right center to tie the contest at 3-3.

St.Mary’s regained the lead in the half inning, after a two out RBI single brought a runner home from second base, 4-3 StMU. That one run in the fourth would prove to be the difference, as the Rattlers took a 4-3 win over the Hounds.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Each team recorded four hits, with Eastern scoring three runs with one walk.
  • Urquidez, Martinez, Leger, and Wooley recorded a base hit, with Urquidez finishing with two RBIs and Wooley also collecting an RBI.
  • Leger takes the loss in the complete game effort, allowing four hits, four runs, with four walks.
  • Jadyn Abrego claims the win in 4.0 innings of work with four hits and three runs conceded. Savannah Youngblood picked up the save, recording three strikeouts in three innings pitched.

GAME TWO: StMU 9, ENMU 1

The home team scored the games first run in the bottom of the second inning. A lead off triple put a runner in scoring position and a groundout sent the runner home for a 1-0 lead. The rest of the Rattlers runs in the inning came with two outs, as StMU posted four hits as five runners reached base. In that process, four runs came around to score for St. Mary’s to take a 5-0 advantage after the second frame.

Eastern picked up its first runs of the ball game in the fourth inning. Wooley started the inning with a double in the left center gap and Urquidez also reached base. After Breanna Loyola walked to load the bases, Jokaira Paredes brought two runs home with a single to left field to cut the deficit to 5-2 StMU.

However, the Rattlers replied in the bottom half of the inning with three runs after an RBI single scored one run, then a 2 RBI double made the score 8-2. St. Mary’s added one more run in the sixth inning with a solo homerun. The final score stood 9-2 in favor of Rattlers.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Eastern posted five hits in the game, scoring two runs. Paredes scattered two hits during the game, with Wooley, Bustillos, and Loyola picking up hits.
  • Paredes had both RBIs in the game, with Bustillos and Wooley registering extra base hits.
  • Urquidez threw two innings, allowing six runs (one earned run) in the loss. Taylor Harrisonand Jennifer Gress each threw one inning, with the latter giving up three runs. Jordan Bowmanfinished the game in the circle, allowing one run from two hits.
  • Catalina Cavazos threw a complete game in the win, allowing two runs on five hits.

“Costly mistakes were the difference in both of these games” said Head Softball Coach Amanda Fefel. “We need to clean up our defense and make routine outs. We need to continue to stay disciplined at the plate and have quality at bats that allow us to execute in any situation, every inning,” said Fefel.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Urquidez produced their seventh homerun of the season, leading the Hounds overall.
  • Loyola produced their first hit of the season in game two, and Paredes posted their fifth multi-hit game of the season.
  • The Greyhounds next head to Austin, Texas for a pair of games against St. Edward’s University on Sunday, Mar. 27. First pitch of game one is expected for 11 am (MST).
