Winifred Louise West was born June 14, 1917, to the home of Jeff Hunt and Nola Sidney Doyle in Krum, TX, and died April 4, 2017 in Portales, NM. On Nov. 7, 1942 she married Brooks Cleveland West in Clovis, NM. They made their home on a farm and ranch in the Upton community.
Winifred drove a school bus for the Floyd Schools for 25 years. She belonged to the Floyd Quilting Bee, and was a member of the Floyd Baptist Church. In 1983 they moved to Portales, and she became a member of the Calvary Baptist church. Winifred was a very active member, always preparing food, and helping when and where she was needed.
Winifred loved family gatherings, neighborhood domino parties, taking the grandchildren camping and the brandings. She always looked forward to playing forty-two every Friday with her friends.
Most of all she loved to quilt. After Brooks passed away in 1985, she said she had to find something to keep her busy. So, she placed one ad in the local newspaper, “Will do quilting in my home.” The best the family can count, she quilted 125 quilts! In addition, every family member has quilts that she made for them.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Danny Boone of Portales; seven granddaughters, Sheila (Bill) Owen of Portales, Donna (Paul) Reeves, Doreen Blair, Charleen Hazzard, Carrie (Larry) Forster, Debbie (Chuck) Edwards and Maureen (Scott) Blair all of TX; one grandson, Gary (Jill) Pettus of FL; three sisters, Jo Cornell, Mary Dodd and Frances Terrell all of Clovis, NM; three brothers, Andy (Lucille) Doyle of CO, Glen (Sarah) Doyle of Portales and Carl Doyle of TX; fourteen great-grandchildren and fourteen great-great-grandchildren. She will be missed by many more. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Rhonda Fitzgerald, a great-grandson, Ryan Blair, a brother, Kenneth Doyle, two sisters, Hazel Wilkerson and Glenna Nell Doyle and by her beloved husband, Brooks who died in Aug. 1985, after nearly 43 years of marriage.
